A historical glimpse on Hilbert's 10th problem

A trailer of a hour-long documentary on Hilbert's 10th problem, by George Csicsery, for which a review can be found here. Features, among others, Julia Robinson and Yuri Matijasevic (who apparently first met in person at a conference in Bucharest).

Arseniy Tarkovsky's "Stalker" poem revisited

I read again - after many years - Arseniy Tarkovsky's poem:
Now summer has passed,
As if it had never been.
It is warm in the sun.
But this isn't enough.

All that might have been,
Like a five-cornered leaf
Fell right into my hands,
But this isn't enough.

Neither evil nor good
Had vanished in vain,
It all burnt with white light,
But this isn't enough.

Life took me under its wing,
Preserved and protected,
Indeed I have been lucky.
But this isn't enough.

Not a leaf had been scorched,
Not a branch broken off. . .
The day wiped clean as clear glass,
But this isn't enough.
Arseniy Tarkovsky was Andrei Tarkovsky's father; the poem is translated by Maria Pearse - see Andrei Tarkovski's nostalgia for the Light. In connection with Fr. Ghelasie's views cosmology, Creation and the fall discussed here, one might ask whether the poet's nostalgia is ultimately for the radiant glory of the uncorrupted Creation - clothed in garments of light - which would be, after all, a longing for Christ, a longing radiating from God's image in us, and echoing the baptismal chant... "Vouchsafe unto me the robe of light, O Thou who clothest Thyself with light as with a garment, Christ our God, plenteous in mercy"... With this in mind, it makes sense to see true poetry as reflecting a longing for the splendor of the word as the "restored word" - a word clothed in the garments of light - that is, clothed in Christ. The following passage from the Eastern Orthodox section of the "Gospel book" in Wikipedia might be revealing:
"Traditionally, the Orthodox will never cover the Gospel Book in leather—the skin of a dead animal—because the words of Christ are considered to be life-giving. Animal skins are also reminiscent of the Fall of Man, when God fashioned garments of skin for Adam and Eve after their disobedience (Genesis 3:21). The Apostle Paul speaks of Christ being the "New Adam" (I_Corinthians 15:22,47-49), and the Orthodox understand Christ as coming to clothe mankind in the original "garments of light" which Adam and Eve lost in Paradise. Traditionally, the Gospel is covered in gold, the earthly element which is best symbolizes the glory of Heaven."
