Fenomenul povestitului: Ion Nechiti din Feldru

Ion Nechiti, Fenomenul povestitului (partea I, partea II).
Intr-adevar, impresionant!

Thurston on mathematical beauty

The hidden face, or the gift of completeness

""Listen to me," cried Syme with extraordinary emphasis. "Shall I tell you the secret of the whole world? It is that we have only known the back of the world. We see everything from behind, and it looks brutal. That is not a tree, but the back of a tree. That is not a cloud, but the back of a cloud. Cannot you see that everything is stooping and hiding a face? If we could only get round in front"  (Gilbert Keith Chesterton: 'The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare.' )

Northrop Frye on literature and mathematics

Herman Northrop Frye (Anatomy of Criticism, 1957, p.351; online source) on literature and mathematics: both
„proceed from postulates, not facts; both can be applied to external reality and yet exist also in a 'pure' or self-contained form. Both, furthermore, drive a wedge between the antithesis of being and non-being that is so important for discursive thought”...

"a very real thing which may be called the love of humanity"...

Those thinkers who cannot believe in any gods often assert that the love of humanity would be in itself sufficient for them; and so, perhaps, it would, if they had it. There is a very real thing which may be called the love of humanity; in our time it exists almost entirely among what are called uneducated people; and it does not exist at all among the people who talk about it.
A positive pleasure in being in the presence of any other human being is chiefly remarkable, for instance, in the masses on Bank Holiday; that is why they are so much nearer Heaven (despite appearances) than any other part of our population.
I remember seeing a crowd of factory girls getting into an empty train at a wayside country station. There were about twenty of them; they all got into one carriage; and they left all the rest of the train entirely empty. That is the real love of humanity. That is the definite pleasure in the immediate proximity of one's own kind. Only this coarse, rank, real love of men seems to be entirely lacking in those who propose the love of humanity as a substitute for all other love; honourable, rationalistic idealists. (G. K. Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles/Chapter XXII)

The richness of Latin music

Latin music seems (to me) richer than many varieties of contemporary "bluesy" (& related) music (granted, there are great musical blues-type moments, but the Latin variety/genre/musical universe appears "richer in infinities"...)

Cat's monastery

The original monastery was built in 327 AD, by Kalokeros, the first Byzantine governor of Cyprus, and patronised by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great. At that time, a terrible drought affected the whole of Cypus, and the entire island was overrun with poisonous snakes which made building the monastery a dangerous affair. Many of the inhabitants left their homes and moved off the island, for fear of the snakes, but Saint Helena came up with a solution to the plague – she ordered 1,000 cats to be shipped in from Egypt and Palestine to fight the reptiles. In the following years, the cats did their duty, hunting and killing most of the snakes in the Akrotiri Peninsula, which soon came to be known as the “Cat Peninsula”. The monks would use a bell to call the cats to the monastery at meal time, and then the felines were dispatched to their snake-hunting duties.” (excerpt from the article The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of the Cats)
