She was in fact every one of them.
Carmen a fost fiecare din acestia. Fiecare dintre ei era ea.
She and them - the quintuple - were her immediate society.
Given the circumstances of her life, this multiplication (leading to situations in which she polemicized with herself) could be seen as sad, or could be seen as an existential literary plot-play.
One does not exclude the other, though.
